What Happens During a Dental Hygiene Visit (and why it matters more than you think!)

Learn what to expect at a dental hygiene visit, common myths, and why prevention matters. Plus, how CDCP may help cover the cost of your next cleaning.

Just because your mouth feels fine doesn’t mean it is. At To The Root Dental Hygiene, we believe that prevention is powerful. Regular cleanings help protect your teeth, gums, and overall health. In this post, we’ll walk you through what to expect at a hygiene visit, debunk some common myths, and share how the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) may help make your care more affordable.

Why Preventive Care Matters

You’ve probably heard the saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” It couldn’t be more true in dentistry. Routine dental hygiene care helps prevent gum disease, decay, and other oral issues before they become bigger, more expensive problems. Prevention isn’t just about your mouth; it’s a foundation for your entire body’s health.

What to Expect During a Dental Hygiene Visit

A dental hygiene appointment is much more than a polish. Here’s what usually happens:

**Medical history review**: We check for updates that could affect your oral health.
**Blood pressure check**: Yes, it matters! Your oral and systemic health are connected.
**Oral cancer screening**: We examine the soft tissues, tongue, and throat.
**Oral Assessment**: We assess your teeth, gums, jaw, and soft tissues.
**Scaling or debridement**: We remove plaque and calculus from above and below the gumline.
**Polishing (optional)**: Removes surface stains and smooths enamel.
**Fluoride or desensitizing treatments**: As needed for prevention or sensitivity.
**Disclosing (sometimes used)**: Helps highlight where bacteria is hiding.
**Home care coaching**: We give personalized advice without judgment.

Many first-time patients are surprised by how much goes into a visit. It’s not rushed—we take time to get to know you, explain what we see, and talk about your overall wellness.

We See All Kinds of Patients

Some of our patients come every 3 to 6 months. Others haven’t had a cleaning in years … or ever. We meet people where they are, and we never judge. Whether you’re overdue or right on schedule, we’re glad you’re here.

      Common Myths About Dental Hygiene

Here are some things we hear a lot, and we want to clarify:
“If nothing hurts, I’m fine.” Many issues like gum disease develop silently.
“If my gums bleed when I floss, I should stop.” Actually, that’s a sign to keep going gently!
“You only clean the surface.” We clean beneath the gumline too.
“Why check my blood pressure?” Because oral care affects your whole body.
“If I have a health condition, I can’t be treated.” In some cases, treatment may need to be delayed, but we’ll always guide you safely.

      Worried About Cost?

Dental care can feel expensive, but you may have new options. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a national program that helps cover preventive dental services for eligible Canadians.
It includes cleanings, assessments, x-rays, fluoride treatments, and more. If you qualify, we can help you apply or understand what’s covered.

      Who Is Eligible for CDCP?

      You may qualify if:
      – You are a Canadian resident
      – You filed your taxes last year
