Unlocking Accessible and Diverse Dental Hygiene Care

Picture this: a dental experience where diversity is celebrated, and accessibility is at the forefront. It’s not just about routine checkups; it’s about feeling welcome, understood, and cared for at every step of your journey towards optimal oral health. Welcome to To The Root Dental Hygiene where we are redefining the standard of preventive dental care.

People find us for many reasons, but we do have multiple wheelchair clients and parents of children with ADHD & Autism who have shared stories of their previous dental experiences. We have an accommodating space, so when someone comes to us in a wheelchair, we can move our dental chair out of the way; their wheelchair fits more easily, and I work standing up and work around the wheelchair; furthermore, there’s lots of room to be able to take x-rays if they’re needed. Our team works tirelessly to ensure people are comfortable and provide personalized care that surpasses expectations. A couple other things that we offer for those with sensory considerations are sensory toys and a more small, calm, and quiet clinical experience. Regularly, parents tell us that our clinic is less intimidating and they like that for their children.

The story behind our approach:

At To The Root Dental Hygiene, this starts with a simple yet powerful realization: traditional dental care often overlooks the unique needs of diverse communities and individuals with disabilities. This sparked a commitment to revolutionize dental hygiene practices, making them accessible and inclusive for everyone in our Grande Prairie community!

What makes To The Root Dental Hygiene accessible?

Accessibility is at the core of this business. We have a wheelchair ramp in the parking lot and wider doors with the ability to make space for a wheelchair to fit in the operatory. We also have a sensory friendly environment that is quieter with sunglasses and sensory toys available to use; we will also schedule longer appointments for those that need it. FYI: we also have a lead apron that works well as a weighted blanket! *I have years of experience with accommodations, and I am happy to listen to your suggestions, so that everyone has a positive experience.*

How does To The Root Dental Hygiene promote diversity?

Diversity isn’t just a buzzword for us-it’s a value that we uphold in everything we do. Our team reflects the which tapestry of our community. We also offer culturally sensitive care, and we can use a translation app for communication gaps and foster inclusivity.

Why do we go above and beyond to prioritize accessibility and diversity in dental hygiene?

The answer is simple: because everyone deserves exceptional care. Whether you are a seasoned dental enthusiast or stepping into a clinic for the first time, we want you to be valued, respected, and empowered to prioritize your oral health.

Here are some tips for at-home dental care for those with Sensory/Behavioral needs:

  • Build the routine and be consistent (everyone needs structure-checklists, charts, timers etc)
  • Tell-Show-Do (use pictures or objects to prep ahead of time & Youtube videos)

Here are some tips for prepping dental appointments for children with Sensory/Behavioural needs:

  • Talk about the appointment in advance. Refer the name of the provider that they’re going to see
  • If this is the first time, then watch videos, books, and pretend practice ahead of time and let the office know about this that will make it easier ahead of time
  • Be clear about expectations and intentions ahead of time
  • Positive reinforcement (we have treasure boxes and xylitol suckers for a reason)

What aspects are important to you, and how can we better tailor our services to meet your needs?

At To The Root Dental Hygiene, accessibility and diversity are not just checkboxes weaved into the fabric of the practice, they represent our unwavering commitment to excellence and inclusion. If you’re ready to have a dental hygiene experience that puts your needs first, then we invite you to join our community.
